Here are some great facts about The Hanging Church in Egypt. - The Hanging Church is the most famous Coptic Christian church in Cairo. - It’s located in El Fustat, old Cairo, specifically Coptic Cairo, which has the largest collection of Christian artwork and artefacts worldwide. - The area included six churches that date back to the early Christian Era. - It’s one of the oldest churches in Egypt, dating back to the 9th century, but the site is thought to be occupied by a church since the 3rd century. - It’s called the Hanging Church because it’s suspended over Babylon Fortress. - The church has 110 icons, the oldest of which dates back to the 8th century. - The ornate interior is covered in bone and ivory inlaid designs, that seem influenced by the geometric and organic forms.
